In a significant departure from the usual government working hours routine of 9 am to 5 pm, new Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed officials and staffers in his office to work in two shifts.

In a late-night order, released from Vaishnaw's office, the staff at the minister's office will work in two shifts of 7 am to 4 pm and 3 pm to midnight with immediate effect.

Railway Ministry ADG for public relations, DJ Narain, confirmed the order. For now, the order is applicable for officials and staff posted in the minister's office.

Stating that there is much is to be done and that every minute counts for the Railways, which is on a mission mode, Narain quoted a 1922 poem by Robert Frost, saying 'miles to go before we sleep.'

Soon after Vaishnaw took charge of the Railways ministry, the 51-year-old former IAS officer in Odisha cadre and alumnus of the IIT Kanpur and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania had outlined his agenda.

He said that he would work to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to transform the lives of the poor, marginalized communities, youth, women, farmers, middle classes and weaker sections of the society.

Besides Railways, Vaishnaw also has the charge of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Communications.
