Eight patients, including a doctor, lost their lives at Delhi's Batra Hospital on Saturday after the supply of medical oxygen ran out at around 11:45 am.

This is the second time in the space of a week that the oxygen tank in the hospital dried up.

Six of the eight deceased patients were admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit and two to the wards. The doctor who passed away has been identified as Gastroenterology unit head Dr RK Himthani.

Batra Hospital officials informed the Delhi High Court on Saturday how 320 patients were without oxygen for about 80 minutes.

The hospital ran out of oxygen at 11:45 am. The replenishment tanker arrived 1 hour 20 minutes later at around 1:30 pm.

Batra hospital authorities said they rang the alarm bells early with regard to the shortage of oxygen.

Batra Hospital CEO Dr Sudhanshu Bankata said that the hospital flagged off the oxygen shortage at 7 am. Authorities were informed that the oxygen will run out by 12 pm.

"The Delhi government did not have any oxygen to supply to us. We were without oxygen till 1:35 pm. As a result, we lost eight patients and a senior doctor. We could not save them even after making effort from our end," he said.
