A building collapsed in north Delhi's Sabzi Mandi area on Monday around noon claiming the lives of two teenagers.

Seven fire tenders were pressed into action for rescue operations, officials said. Construction works were underway in the building when the incident took place.

Amid continuing heavy rains in Delhi, the building in Ghanta Ghar Sabzi Mandi area near Malka Ganj came crashing down.

Reports said some other people, including a worker and a rickshaw puller, are feared trapped under the debris.

The elderly man, who has been identified as Ramji Das, sustained head injury, police said as quoted by PTI.

The two more children -- both boys aged 7 and 12-year-old -- who were trapped under the rubble were also rescued and sent to hospital.

"Both of them are brothers and were declared brought dead at the hospital, the officer said.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) NS Bundela said two children were rescued and taken to hospital where they were declared brought dead.

"They were passing by the road with their mother when the building collapsed and the two brothers got trapped under the debris.

"A case will be registered in the matter and legal action will be taken accordingly," he said, PTI reported.

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said they were yet to ascertain what exactly caused the building collapse; however, they were of the view that heavy rainfall for the last few days in the city could have weakened the structure of the building.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he is closely monitoring the situation. He tweeted in Hindi, "The accident of building collapse in Sabzi Mandi area is very sad. The administration is engaged in relief and rescue work, through the district administration, I myself am monitoring the situation," when loosely translated in English.
