New Delhi: Lajpat Nagar central market in Delhi on Monday was shut for flouting Covid-19 norms. The Delhiites now won't be able to visit the market for shopping till further orders.

"Lajpat Nagar Market Traders Association asked to show cause why action should not be taken against them for violating Covid norms," said the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).

The decision was taken after an inspection was carried out by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Praveer Kumar Singh along with Covid-19 appropriate behaviour (CAB) enforcement teams.

The order was issued by PK Tripathi, additional district magistrate (Southeast).

The enforcement teams found that social distancing norms were not being followed in one of the major markets of the national capital. Vendors were seen selling edibles without using adequate precautions "in gross violation of the social distancing norms", the order said.

"In view of the above, it is hereby directed that the market is closed with immediate effect until further orders," the order said.

Earlier, the markets in East and West Delhi were also closed for not following Covid-19 appropriate behaviour. The orders said that the general public and the shopkeepers didn't follow coronavirus protocols.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in its order had directed that all Covid-appropriate behaviour, including the use of face masks and social distancing, should be maintained at all the malls, markets, market complexes, standalone shops, and neighbourhood shops. The DDMA had also said that if the norms of Covid-appropriate behaviour are not maintained by any shop, then it will be liable to be closed and its owner may face prosecution under relevant laws.
