As coronavirus cases continue to surge, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Monday decided to put the national capital under complete lockdown for a week from tonight 10 pm till next Monday 5 am.

This comes after CM held a key meeting with LG Anil Baijal as Delhi recorded the biggest jump in its daily Covid-19 tally with 25,462 fresh cases, while the positivity rate shot up to 29.74%— which means almost every third sample being tested in the city is turning out to be positive.

All private offices will Work From Home and only government offices and essential services will be open, sources say.

In the earlier order, auditoriums, restaurants, malls, gyms and spas were shut down in Delhi and movie theatres are allowed only with a third of their capacity. All gatherings -- social, religious or political - were banned.

It is also said that other stricter curbs may be announced later in the day.

On Sunday, Kejriwal said Delhi was facing an "acute shortage" of oxygen for COVID-19 patients and alleged that the quota of the city has been diverted to other states. The chief minister's remarks came hours after he wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his help in enhancing the number of hospital beds and immediate oxygen supply for patients in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government wrote to the Indian Railways on Sunday requesting its support to arrange for bed facilities for the patients at Anand Vihar and Shakur Basti stations to tackle the massive surge of Covid-19 cases in the national capital.

Last week, CM Kejriwal, in a virtual video conference, had announced a weekend curfew in the city to break the chain of transmission of coronavirus. “It is unanimously decided to impose weekend curfew because people normally visit outside their homes for entertainment or other activities which can be curtailed. The restriction may not create much problem to the people. The purpose is to break the chain of Covid infection on weekends”, the AAP leader had said.
