Delhi government announces reopening of schools from September 1

The Delhi government has announced that schools will re-open in a phased manner from September 1. As per the fresh notification by the Delhi government, schools for classes 9th to 12th will reopen from September 1, while schools for classes 6th to 8th will reopen from September 8.

The decision comes after the meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority on Friday.  Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, "Students will need parents' permission and no one will be forced to attend."

Detailing about the announcement, he said that apart from schools, colleges and coaching activities in Delhi will also start with all precautions in a phased manner from September 1. He also said stated strict adherence to social distancing norms will be followed. No student will be forced to come to the school and consent of parents will be essential for students to come, he added.

Lieutenant Governor Baijal on August 6 set up an expert committee to review the Covid situation in Delhi and prepare a report on possibilities of reopening schools in the national capital.

The committee was asked to chalk out a detailed plan regarding the reopening of schools. The Lieutenant governor had noted that there was no harm in calling students back to schools in Delhi.

CM Kejriwal on Wednesday had also told reporters that the Delhi government wanted schools to be reopened as soon as possible but is evaluating all factors to ensure the safety of students.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia informed that around 90% of the parents wanted the schools to reopen. Schools in Delhi have shut down ahead of the first national pandemic induced lockdown back in March.
