A delegation led by CM Nitish Kumar, Bihar leaders including Janata Dal (United), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Tejashwi Yadav and others met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at South Block in Delhi on Monday to discuss a caste-based census.

Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), which is an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bihar, said the leaders of all political parties from the state placed their views on the caste-wise census in front of the PM.

“People in Bihar and the entire country are of the same opinion on this issue. We are grateful to the PM for listening to us. Now, he has to take a decision on it.”

Leader of Opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, RJD said, “Our delegation met the PM today not only for the caste census in the state (Bihar) but in the entire country. We are awaiting a decision on this now,” after meeting with PM Modi over caste census. “If animals, trees can be counted, so can people; caste census will be historic pro-poor measure,” he added.

Nitish Kumar had said a resolution regarding the caste-based census was passed unanimously in Bihar Legislative Assembly as well as the Legislative Council two years ago and was passed unanimously once again in 2020 in the state Legislative Assembly.

Meanwhile, the CM had also stated that if Centre does not agree then "Bihar will proceed to conduct a caste-based census." However, the Central government has so far refused to comply with the demand.

Tejashwi Yadav said earlier this month that he wrote to PM Modi asking for a discussion on the caste-based census. He also said that Kumar has assured all opposition parties of a meeting with the Prime Minister and also written a letter to him on August 4. “If he has not been granted time for a week now, somehow it is an insult to the CM,” the RJD leader was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Nitish Kumar had sought an appointment with PM Modi after a request for caste-based census was made by Bihar Grand Alliance leaders.
