New Delhi: After the India Meteorological Department’s prediction that cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ will make landfall somewhere between Paradwip in Odisha and Sagar in West Bengal on May 26 evening at a speed ranging between 155 km/hr and 165 km/hr, the district administrations of East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas have started evacuating people from low-lying areas.

"We are asking the people who mainly stay in mud houses in the low-lying areas to leave their homes and go to the cyclone centres. The government has made arrangements for food and other things. People who are detected with Covid have also been asked to shift to safe homes," a senior state government official said.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, the cyclone Yaas is 670 kms away from the coast of Digha in West Bengal and is expected to turn into a severe cyclonic storm by Monday night. The India Meteorological Department on Sunday said that Cyclone Yaas will lash Odisha and West Bengal with “highly damaging wind speed" and can be compared to the damage with the last Cyclone Amphan.

A 90-member team of the National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force, and coastal guards have been pressed into action to evacuate the people from the low-lying areas.

The depression over Bay of Bengal is very likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday morning and further into a very severe cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours, said the India Meteorological Department.

Meanwhile, Union home minister Amit Shah will hold a meeting via video conference today with the Chief Ministers of Odisha Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and the lieutenant governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to review preparations in view of Cyclone Yaas.
