COVID cases dip, black fungus cases on the rise; 1,250 cases, 39 deaths reported in Karnataka
A drastic dip in new Covid cases may be giving some breather to hospitals and state administration but the increasing cases of black fungus is worrying as the state has officially recorded 1,250 cases and 39 deaths so far.
FollowThe latest data from the Department of Health and Family Welfare has some bad news for the public as the newfound worry among Covid recovered patients that of black fungus will only increase as only 18 patients have been cured from a whopping 1,250 cases so far.
A report also mentioned that already 39 people have died due to the deadly infection.
Out of 1,250 cases once again it is only Bengaluru that tops the list with 521 cases and still has over 500 patients in which some are under treatment and some are struggling for the same.
Apart from Bengaluru, North Karnataka districts like Dharwad, Kalaburagi and Bagalkot are also worst hit by this infection for which the line of treatment is to administer Amphotericin-B and surgery is a must in case the infection has advanced.
Dharwad reported 119 cases and 8 deaths, Kalaburgi reported 102 cases and 4 deaths while Bagalkot reported 68 cases and one death so far.
Who are susceptible for black fungus?
Mostly those who are aged, under treatment for diabetes and administered steroids or those who were on oxygen support for a few days and may have used unclean water in filters instead of distilled water or who wore the same mask without washing for many days. Hence the doctors advise that after recovery from Covid, the patients should consult, ENT specialist for nasal endoscopy after 3 days and follow it on 7th day and also after 21 days for early treatment and better results.
What happens in black fungus case?
Patients after recovering from Covid and if under treatment with comorbid conditions like diabetes are likely to get this infection.
Once infected, the patients will see symptoms of swollen eyes, rashes on the face, weak tooth and gums and immediately need admission. The doctors will administer the drug and in severe cases, the infected part like nose, eyes, the doctor have to cut the infected part and remove in some cases.
Initially, when one of two cases were being reported, the patients and their relatives found it difficult to get the drug as this is available only in a few hospitals and not in every pharmacy store. The health minister K Sudhakar had informed the press then that the state has requested for 25,000 vials of the costly drug and so far the state has managed to get only 10,000.
Meanwhile, as there is more caseload in Bengaluru, at present separate blocks have been created at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital and Victoria Hospital to treat patients at a government hospital and the treatment for the same is also available in some private hospitals.
As cases in different districts are also reported, such patients are treated in every district hospital that is treating Covid cases. Extra blocks have been added to treat patients with black fungus cases.
