A coup has hit Lok Janshakti Party chief Chirag Paswan after his own party's Lok Sabha MPs sought to replace him from the top post and instead appoint his uncle, Pashupati Paras.

On Sunday night, the five MPs wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking to be recognised as the original Lok Janshakti Party under the leadership of Pashupati Paras.

The 5 MPs will meet the Election Commission on Monday in this regard. Later today, they are expected to hold a media briefing.

The rift within the LJP came to the fore when Chirag lashed out at his uncle for praising Nitish Kumar's government in Bihar in October last year.

Paras had then said that Bihar had seen development in the last 15 years under Nitish Kumar. His stand was exactly opposite to that of Chirag who had been going hammer and tongs against the Janata Dal-United chief.

Paras, according to party sources, had been miffed with Chirag ever since the spat and had been waiting to settle scores. In February this year, more than 200 LJP leaders joined the JD-U in Bihar.

To recall, LJP came out of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in Bihar to contest against Nitish Kumar's JD-U.
