Despite inclement weather with gusting winds and waves, the Indian Coast Guard has rescued 12 crew members of MV Kanchan, which was stranded off Umargam in Gujarat and later sank.

Mumbai-based ICG's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre received information about the vessel being stranded off Umargam with 12 Indian crew onboard due to contamination in fuel which led to the non-operational engine and electrical power onboard.

"The weather in the area was inclement with winds gusting up to 50 Knots and waves reaching up to the height of 3-3.5 meters. Later in the evening, the master of the vessel intimated that MV Kanchan, which was carrying steel coils as cargo, had dropped anchor and listing/ tilting towards Starboard (right) side," the ICG Spokesperson DIG Aniket Singh said.

Through International Safety Net, the MRCC Mumbai activated all the vessels in the vicinity to assist the stranded vessel MV Kanchan.

"MV Hermeez in the vicinity was quick to respond and immediately diverted towards the distressed vessel," he said.

Simultaneously, ETV Water Lily was deployed by DG Shipping for assisting the stranded vessel. In addition, two tugs were also deployed by the vessel owners.

Indian Coast Guard also pressed into service its helicopter from Daman.
