Charanjit Singh Channi to be new Punjab Chief Minister, unanimously elected announces Congress
The Congress has been holding several meetings since the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh from the post of CM on Saturday.
Congress leader Charanjit Channi has been unanimously elected as new Punjab Chief Minister, ending hours of speculation about who succeeds and takes over reins of the state government after Amarinder Singh.
“It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Sh. Charanjit Singh Channi has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab,” Punjab Congress in charge Harish Rawat said.
This development comes hours after sources said Sukhjinder Randhawa had been elected as Congress Legislature Party leader.
Channi, Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency MLA held the Technical Education and Industrial Training portfolio in the outgoing Amarinder Cabinet.
The 48-year-old visited Punjab Raj Bhawan and met the governor at 6.30 pm on Sunday.
Meanwhile, supporters of new Punjab CM-designate Charanjit Singh Channi celebrated outside Governor's house in Chandigarh.
