Charanjit Singh Channi sworn-in as Punjab Chief Minister, two deputies take oath

Charanjit Singh Channi, a three-time MLA from Rupnagar's Chamkaur Sahib was sworn in as Punjab’s new Chief Minister on Monday.

The Congress had picked Charanjit Singh Channi as the Chief Minister of Punjab amid a bitter war within the state Congress and a day after Amarinder Singh resigned.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu who were present at the swearing-in ceremony congratulated Charanjit Singh Channi on becoming the new Punjab CM.

Channi, who is known to be close to Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, took oath of office administered by the Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit at Raj Bhawan.

Meanwhile, Sukhjinder Randhawa and OP Soni, both from the Majha region of Punjab took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers.

Channi succeeds Amarinder Singh, who had stepped down as CM on Saturday. He has been a CLP member and Leader of Opposition in the previous SAD-BJP government in the state.

Channi is be the first Dalit leader to hold the top post in the state. 

Meanwhile, Captain Amarinder Singh has invited CM Charanjit Singh Channi for lunch at his farmhouse. Sources said that some MLAs will also attend the meeting.

The former CM skipped Channi's oath taking ceremony as invited him for lunch instead. 

Amarinder after submitting his resignation on Saturday said that he faced 'humiliation' within the party and lashed out at Sidhu saying he would be a destroyer for Punjab.

Channi’s wife Kamaljeet is a doctor, and the couple has two children. Navjeet Singh, his  elder son is a graduate from PEC University of Technology and is now studying law.
