Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and the newly appointed state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu met today at Punjab Bhawan over a cup of tea.

Punjab MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu is all set to take over as the state Congress president on Friday amid a bitter stalemate with Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh that has lasted for nearly two years.

While there were rumours earlier that the CM won’t attend Sidhu’s coronation, Singh later relented, signalling a truce ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections next year.

Their meeting, coming after months of a confrontation between the two, may mark the end of the political crisis in the state party unit.

Sidhu had earlier penned a letter to the CM, urging him "to come and bless the new team of PCC on the occasion of our taking charge" on Friday.

In his letter to Singh, which emphasised party chief Sonia Gandhi's role in his promotion, he said, "I have no personal agenda, only pro-people agenda. Thus, as the eldest of our Punjab Congress family, I request you to please come and bless the new team of PCC."

Later in the afternoon, Raveen Thukral, the Chief Minister's media advisor tweeted, "Punjab CM has invited all MLAs, MPs and senior party functionaries at Punjab Bhawan for tea at 10 am on Friday. They will all then go to Punjab Congress Bhawan together from there for the installation of the new PPCC team."

The meeting ended the speculations around Amarinder Singh's presence at the event where Sidhu will be formally handed over the reins of the Congress party's Punjab unit.

Punjab goes to polls early next year.
