New Delhi: Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Union Minister for Education, has resigned from his post this afternoon, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s big cabinet reshuffle that will be announced at 6 pm. The Member of Parliament from Haridwar joined office in 2019.

Pokhriyal’s last major announcement as the Education Minister came on July 6, when he informed students of fresh dates for the postponed JEE Main exams. Students were expecting him to make an announcement on the medical exam NEET soon.

During his term as the union Education Minister, India adopted the New National Education Policy (NEP), which replaced the old one adopted in 1986.

As per reports, Union Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar has also resigned from the Narendra Modi cabinet ahead of the reshuffle. Debasree Chaudhuri, Minister of State for Woman and Child Development also resigned from the Cabinet.

PM Modi is likely to induct around a dozen more ministers in the Cabinet, whose strength can go up to 81 members – that is 15% of the Lok Sabha strength. The current strength of the Council of Ministers stands is 53.

Leaders who are likely to make an entry into the Cabinet include Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sushil Modi and Sarbananda Sonowal. RCP Singh, JD(U) leader and a close confidant of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may find a place in the Cabinet.

The Cabinet expansion, which is expected on July 7, will be the first reshuffle since the Modi government returned to power for the second time in 2019.
