Border crisis blows up: Mizoram cops book Assam chief minister and 8 officials

Mizoram Police has filed criminal cases against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, four of his senior state police officials and two state officials in connection with the clashes that erupted at the border between the two states. Six Assam Police personnel and a civilian were killed in the faceoff while over 60 were injured. 

Himanta and his state officials have been booked under various charges, including attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy that led to the firing on the outskirts of Vairengte town in Mizoram’s Kolasib district. They have been summoned for questioning on August 1.

The Assam Police officials who have been booked in the FIR include Inspector General of Police Anurag Aggarwal, Cachar Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Nimbalkar, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Cachar Devojyoti Mukherjee and officer-in-charge of Dholai police station, Sahab Uddin.

The two Assam administrative officials named in the FIR are Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli and Cachar Divisional Forest Officer Sunnydeo Chaudhary.

Cases have also been registered in Mizoram against nearly 200 unidentified Assam Police personnel.

Assam hunts for Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram.

An Assam Police team pasted a notice outside the residence of Mizoram Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlavena for making threatening statements targeting civil and police officials.

The Assam Police believes there are reasonable grounds to question the MP on the border clash, and the notice directs the latter to appear at the Dholai police station at 11 am on August 1 without fail.

Both sides have been accusing each other of triggering the violence at the border.

Assam Police has also served notices to Mizoram police officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Superintendent of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Additional Superintendent of Police of Kolasib.
