The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday claimed it had accessed the Congress party' toolkit' aimed at defaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government with regard to its handling of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Congress, however, rubbished BJP's allegations.

BJP leader Sambit Patra shared screenshots of the alleged Congress toolkit on Twitter which urged its users to call the B.1.617 variant, which has been wreaking havoc in the country as "Indian strain" and "Modi strain".

The document shared by Sambit Patra and other BJP leaders claimed that the second wave of Covid-19 is an opportunity to destroy the image of Prime Minister Modi, whose approval ratings -- as per the toolkit -- have not dipped despite the crisis and mismanagement.

The BJP leader alleged that the toolkit lays special emphasis on expanding foreign media coverage, panning the government's response to the Coronavirus pandemic and providing them with dramatic pictures of funerals and dead bodies to amplify the critical reporting.

The BJP alleged that instead of extending help to the needy during the pandemic, the Congress toolkit directed its cadre to allegedly get in touch with local ground level political leaders in cities to keep some beds and other facilities blocked in friendly hospitals, which would be released only on the party's request.

The Congress, however, lashed out at the BJP, stating that the only 'toolkit' it needs is one that helps people. The party also threatened to file FIR against BJP president JP Nadda and other BJP leaders.

"After failing to help India in fighting pandemic, the BJP has now stooped to a new low by spreading falsehood to discredit those who are assisting people. We are going to file an FIR against BJP President @JPNadda, @sambitswaraj and others indulging in forging documents," the Congress party said.

The party also said that if the BJP had spent as much time and effort in helping people, the saffron party would not have to spread lies about those doing their jobs for them.

"It is a shame that the government is more interested in maligning the Opposition than protecting people," the party said.

Rajeev Gowda, chairman of the All India Congress Committee, which BJP claimed, was behind the toolkit, lashed out at the ruling party.

On Twitter, Gowda said, "BJP is propagating a fake "toolkit" on "COVID-19 mismanagement and attributing it to AICC Research Department. We are filing an FIR for forgery against @jpnadda & @sambitswaraj. When our country is devastated by COVID, instead of providing relief, BJP shamelessly concocts forgeries."
