Amidst the ongoing anti-encroachment drive in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged the minority community to adopt decent family planning measures to control the population and reduce poverty.

Interacting with media persons on the occasion of his government completing a month, Sarma said that population explosion is the reason behind social evils like poverty and encroachment.

Such problems could be solved if the minority community adopts decent family planning norms, he said, adding that he was ready to engage with all concerned stakeholders in this regard.

The chief minister warned that if the population explosion continued at this rate, one day, even the Kamakhya temple land would be encroached upon.

Recently, members of the minority community in three state districts were evicted from areas they had allegedly encroached upon.

Taking on those who have been criticising the government action, Sarma clarified that his government would not allow land encroachment in temples, 'sattras' (Vaishanavite institutions), forests or any other place with which sentiments of people are associated.

He also reiterated that his government was not against any community.
