Two civilians were killed, and several policemen injured after a clash broke out during a drive to eliminate illegal encroachment as the police open-fired in Dholpur in Assam’s Darrang district.

Outrage from allegedly illegal settlers triggered mob fury and as a result, policemen in riot gear and armed with guns and sticks chased and attacked protesters and even fired shots.

In horrifying visuals, a purported viral video of the clash shows a government cameraman who was accompanying the police personnel jumping on and hitting the man, beaten by policemen, felled by gunshots moments earlier.

The accused, identified as Bijoy Bonia has been arrested and a case has been registered against him, said the Assam Criminal Investigation Department.

The state government has ordered a probe into Thursday's violence, which will be headed by a retired High Court judge.

According to some eyewitnesses, the photographer had been chased by the man who was later shot by the police.

The two casualties in the clash were identified as Saddam Hussain and Sheikh Farid, but there was no official confirmation of whether one of them was the villager seen in the video.

According to Times Now report, Ranjit Kumar Dass, Assam Minister has said that the Assam CM Hemanta Biswa Sarma who is also the state home minister will take strict actions in the matter, the public has assigned us to protect them and we are all with them, he further added.

In the drive against encroachments at Dholpur on Monday around 800 families were evicted. The state government wants to repossess 4,500 bighas of government land for an agricultural project.
