Chandigarh: In an apparent show of strength, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh hosted dinner for around 55 Congress MLAs and eight MPs at the residence of Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi.

Earlier in the day, 23 MLAs of the Congress party, including four ministers, wanted the CM to be replaced for not keeping some of the party's poll promises and skipped a meeting of council of ministers. Earlier, three of the four ministers who had demanded the dismissal of Singh skipped a meeting of the council of ministers.

The Chief Minister's meeting with party legislators has come amid the infighting between camps of the CM and state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who once again reminded Amarinder Singh of his promise to slash power rates.

"Congress Party stands by its resolve to give domestic power at 3 Rs per unit and industrial power at 5 Rs per unit through annulment of PPAs, along with the already provided Subsidy for over 10,000 Crores to Farmers and SC, BC, BPL families? This promise too must be fulfilled," Sidhu said in a tweet.

With 10 MLAs of Navjot Singh Sidhu’s camp present during the dinner meeting, Sidhu, who was recently elevated as Punjab Congress Chief by the party, now has the support of only 20 MLAs including 4 Cabinet Ministers.

Amarinder Singh camp’s show of strength comes hours after Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat gave an ultimatum to Navjot Singh Sidhu for dismissing his advisors over their controversial remarks.

“These advisers were not appointed by the party. We have asked Sidhu to dismiss them. If Sidhu does not do that, I will. We do not want people who embarrass the party,” Rawat was quoted as saying by NDTV.
