In yet another humanitarian act, the Indian Army on January 23 rescued a mother and her newborn child who were trapped in a blizzard by carrying them for almost 6km in knee-deep snow to their home in a remote area of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district.

An Indian Army official said that 22 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion's Company Operating Base sprang into action after receiving a distress call from Farooq Khasana, a resident of Dardpura Lolab.

"Due to heavy snowfall all roads were in non-trafficable condition and the newborn and mother were trapped in a blizzard," he said.

Following the call, the troops reached out to assist the family and helped them reach their home safely.

The father of the newborn thanked the Army for the assistance they gave.

This act of kindness was well appreciated by the civil population and health authorities, the official said.
