A massive 6.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Assam at 7:51 am on Wednesday. The epicentre of the earthquake was Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district.

The National Center for Seismology reported that the tremors were felt in parts of northeast and as far as north Bengal.

Minor aftershocks were experienced following the major quake that seismologists report struck at a depth of 17 km near Sonitpur.

No loss of lives has been reported, even though the quake did pull down some walls. Cracks in structures have been reported in some areas.

Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared images of broken walls inside a building.

"Just experienced a massive earthquake in Assam. Waiting for details," he said.

Prime Minster Narendra Modi called up Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and assured all possible help from the Centre.
