With no response from government Tamil Nadu farmer protesting in Delhi attempts suicide

Farmers from Tamil Nadu have been protesting at the Jantar Mantar for the last ten days demanding farm loan waiver, crop insurance and setting up of the Cauvery Management Board by the Centre.

However, on Monday, July 24, a protester allegedly tried committing suicide by consuming sleeping pills.

Farmers' leader P Ayyakkannu told PTI that Subramaniam, a resident of Tamil Nadu's Namakkal district, "attempted suicide out of frustration as there is no response from governments to their agitation".

"He tried to end his life thinking the governments would take action," Ayyakkannu said, adding that he never encouraged such acts.

However, the police claimed that it was only a case of drug overdose. They claimed that the man was suffering from depression and insomnia and took extra pills last night as he was having trouble falling asleep.

The police immediately rushed him to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

A senior doctor at the hospital confirmed that the protester had consumed some tablets due to which he felt dizzy and was brought to the hospital. The doctor said that the man’s condition is stable.
