TN Govt warns businessmen about the rise in prices due to GST

“If anybody increases the prices beyond GST, stern action will be taken against them” said Finance Minister D.Jayakumar.

GST has been implemented throughout India. Taxes for the rice, pulses, salt, tea dust, milk have been reduced considerably. On the contrary, many businessmen have hiked the prices indicating GST as a reason. In some places, the price of tea has been increased from Rs.8 to Rs.10.

Unless the prices of milk, sugar and tea dust are increased, one should not increase the price of tea. The price of ‘water can’ has been increased by Rs.5.

In hotels the prices of idli and dosa have been increased. It has shocked the public as the prices of the ingredients of those food products remain the same. Since the detail on what will cost more and what will be cheaper for the public is not properly announced, the civilians are left with confusion.

With regards to this, Finance Minister Jayakumar said, “If anybody increases the prices beyond GST, stern action will be taken against them”. It is highly punishable to hike the prices for food products in the name of GST. Similarly if they charge more tax than the stipulated tax for any consumer product, the public should immediately make a complaint. A complaint cell has been formed by the state Commercial Taxes Department for this purpose”.
