Kollywood: Legendary Tamil film director K Balachander's statue inaugurated at Nannilam

Legendary Tamil film director K Balachanders statue inaugurated at Nannilam

Legendary filmmaker K Balachander’s statue was unveiled in Nallumangudi, Nannilam. The statue was unveiled by his wife Rajam Balachander. Lyricist Vairamuthu, director Mani Ratnam, Vasanth and Pyramid Natarajan participated in this event. As per the request of some persons from the film industry, heavy police protection was given in Nannilam. 

K Balachander is known for his achievements in both silver and small screens. He started his journey during the black and white film era. 

He was born in the village Nallumangudi of Nannilam on July 9. 1930. He began his career in the stage dramas which eventually got him a chance to work as a dialogue writer in MGR’s film Deivathai. 

Neer Kumily was his first directorial venture. This movie was released on 1965 in which the actor Nagesh played the lead role. 

Later the movies such as Major Chandrakanth, Ethir Neechal, Bama Vijayam, Arangetram, Aval Oru Thodarkathai, Apoorva Raagangal, Varumayin Niram Sivappu, Unnal Mudiyum Thambi, gave him the title ‘Iyakunar Sigaram’. 

Rajinikanth, the superstar of Tamil cinema was introduced to acting in films by this great director.

He has also introduced talented actors such as Jai Ganesh, Vijayakumar, Sripriya, Sujatha, Delhi Ganesh, Shoba, Sarath Babu, Nassar, Radharavi, Dilip, Vivek and Prakash Raj.

The drama artists such as YG Mahendran, Kaathadi Ramamurthy and S.V Sekar were also introduced by him to the film industry.

He has also directed three Hindi movies such as Ek Duuje Ke Liye. 

He has been honored with the Kalaimamani and Padma Shri awards for his accomplishments in cinema.

The central government has also honored him with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award in Indian Cinema.
