A new study using NASA's James Webb Telescope finds 60% of ancient galaxies spin the same way. This surprising pattern may mean the universe has hidden order and could even exist inside a giant black hole.

New lab experiments and James Webb Telescope data show Europa’s icy surface constantly changing due to heat and cosmic particles. Scientists believe this could be clear evidence of a salty liquid ocean beneath the surface.

After carefully studying the entire data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which indicated the planet's existence, the team decided to observe it with Webb. Webb's near-infrared spectrograph (NIRSpec) recorded the planet simply and clearly just after two transit observations.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope were able to see the first ever in-space test for planetary defence, which included deliberately crashing a spaceship with a tiny asteroid. DART deliberately slammed with the asteroid Dimorphos, which is around 9.6 million kilometres from Earth, at a speed of 22,500 km/h.

The world is getting its first glimpse of the full capabilities of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, a collaboration with ESA and CSA. The first full-color images and spectroscopic data from the telescope were released during a televised broadcast from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt.

This image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 -- Webb's first deep field -- is a composite made from images at different wavelengths and reveals thousands of galaxies, including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared.

NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) will release a collection of so-called "first light" photographs that demonstrate the space telescope's actual capability in a sequence of carefully scheduled events.

The James Webb Space Telescope will not orbit the Earth like the Hubble Space Telescope; instead, it will orbit the Sun 1.5 million kilometres (1 million miles) distant at the second Lagrange point, or L2.

The launch, which is slated for 9:20 a.m. (12:20 GMT), will send the telescope on a month-long trek to its distant orbit.
