In a heartwarming gesture, British scientists who developed the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, National Health Service members and frontline medical staff received a standing ovation at Wimbledon's Centre Court.
Among those who were honoured at the Centre Court were Sarah Gilbert, one of the British scientists behind the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, and Captain Sir Tom Moore, whose Covid-19 fundraising walk raised 33 million Pounds for the NHS. Captain Sir Tom Moore succumbed to the coronavirus in February.
Wimbledon's official Twitter handle released the video with a statement, "An opening day on Centre Court with a difference."Â
The message further said that honour was a special moment to say thank you to those who have played such an important role in United Kingdom's Coronavirus response.Â
The standing ovation left Dame Sarah Gilbert overwhelmed. The professor of Vaccinology at Oxford University is regarded as a hero in the United Kingdom. She Gilbert designed the vaccine with Sir Andrew Pollard and Clinical Biomanufacturing Facility Professor Cath Green.Â
The announcer also lauded individuals involved in nursing staff, critical care and community workers and said that they had been invited to the exclusive Royal Box at the Centre Court for the next fortnight.
