The battle for the quarterfinals concluded with intensity, as the 2021 Copa America continues to impress with some exciting matches and surprising competition. On the same note, a couple of games from the South Zone were conducted on Thursday as we present the round-up.

Uruguay dominates Bolivia
Record 15-time champion Uruguay was up against minnow Bolivia at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba. The match was intense in the opening half until Carlos Lampe's own goal handed Uruguay the opening lead in the 40th minute, with the side leading at half-time.

Bolivia showed some fighting spirit in the second half, until the 70th minute when Édinson Cavani doubled it, thanks to Facundo Torres's assist. It eventually turned out to be the winner, as Uruguay remained in the fourth spot but sealed its berth for the quarters, eliminating Bolivia.

  • Bolivia lost its 11th game in the row in the tournament, making it its longest such run in the tournament since 2015.
  • Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani are the only scorers for Uruguay this edition, with 66% of their shots on target.

Paraguay upsets Chile, but no harm done
In the next game of the night, former two-time champion Chile was up against minnow Paraguay at the Estádio Nacional de Brasília. The opening half was no short on intense as the previous clash, while Braian Samudio handed Paraguay the opening lead in the 33rd minute, as it led at half-time.

Although Chile upped its ante in the following half, it was only until the 58th minute when Paraguay was awarded a penalty, with Miguel Almiron swiftly converting it for the winner. The win took the side to the second spot, one above Chile, besides confirming its quarters' berth.

  • Samudio scored his first goal for Paraguay, besides being the 12th different scorer under Eduardo Berizzo.
  • Paraguay has the most shots on target in this edition (17).
