Southern Railways appoint captains to ensure passenger safety
- On a trial basis captains were appointed in three trains
- Passengers can approach him in case of any grievance
- The captain is supposed to ensure safety and comfort of passengers
FollowIn a bid to ensure the safety of train passengers, Southern Railways has appointed a 'Captain' in the trains to ensure the comfort of travellers. The decision was taken based on a complaint filed by Anupa Narayan, a Kochi native.
Narayan had complained about an inconvenience she encountered during her trip from Katpadi to Ernakulam on Suvidha Express. As she boarded the train, it was found that another person has occupied her berth. Though she informed him that the seat was reserved, the passenger refused to leave. Narayan then sought the help of Railway police, but they couldn't do any thing as the officials had no authority to allot of change berth. The ticket examiner came only at the last minute, and this prompted Narayan to register a complaint, Ajeet Saxena, Chief Commercial Manager of Southern Railway said.
Captain was appointed on a trial basis on three trains. The captain will travel from the starting station to destination. His name and contact details will be displayed on the travel chart pasted outside the bogeys and at the railway station. Details will be sent as SMS to those taking tickets online.
The official will conduct checks at regular intervals through out the journey and passenger can approach him in the case of any difficulty. He will be available in one of the AC coaches. The captain will coordinate with various departments including Railway Police and electrical section. So if you have any issue with your AC or there is a scarcity of water captain is the right person to contact.
Passengers were also happy to have a responsible official on the train. If found success, the facility will be extended to all trains of Southern Railways.
