North East immigrants prone to sexual abuse in Bengaluru

The community members of the North East of India living away from their homeland say, by and large, people consider them as 'outsiders'. From calling them 'Chinky', a derogatory slang used for Chinese nationals, passing lewd comments and stalking them have become regular instances that threaten the safety and security of North Easterns living in the city, and the latest case of molestation has sent shivers down their spine, as told by the members of North East community.

“The incident was so shocking, that, the victim who had just come to the City a week ago has vacated the house and is now staying at another place,” said Rini.

"The poor girl started shouting 'help, help' was heard by a male student staying in the same apartment complex. Before he came out to see what happened, a woman just shut the door on the victim instead of allowing her inside. This is not the only incident, I have got many cases were girls from North East living in the city have become the victims of harassment. Recently, a male member of our community was also attacked at Banaswadi for parking a bike on the Road," said Dr Rini.

“When I insisted the boy to give a complaint, he told that he was sure that he would not get justice and hence did not want to file a complaint,” she added.

The association says that the harassment against NE migrants is increasing day by day and they will soon meet the City Police Commissioner Praveen Sood and submit him a memorandum asking for better security for the community.
