 Biju, a passionate snake catcher from Kottayam, Kerala, had a tragic end after being bitten by a spectacled cobra while he was trying to save the injured reptile on Tuesday. 

 

After spotting the venomous snake in the premises of a house at Chethakkal near Vakathanam in Kottayam, the landlord tried to catch it. When the search turned futile, he ploughed the land using an earthmover, and the reptile got injured in the process.

Local people informed Biju, a well-known snake catcher in the locality, who successfully captured the snake and took it to a Forest Department Office nearby.  After reaching the office, he tried to take the ferocious 6.5 feet cobra out of the sack for the veterinarians to treat its wound.  But the frightened snake sank its fangs into both hands of Biju.

Even after being bitten, Biju kept his cool and moved it safely to another bag and made sure that it was safe.Forest officials took Biju to Kottayam Medical College after giving first aid. His condition got worse during treatment and was on ventilator support. He died at Kottayam medical college on early morning on Tuesday.

A daily wage labourer was the only earning member of a five member family including his wife and three children. Locals say that he has captured nearly 2,000 snakes and let them free in forests. Inspired by snake catchers on television channels, the young man volunteered into the risky job that finally claimed his life.
