Kerala 8th best destination in World to be in 2017

Kerala is making waves in the world travel and tourism circles. Past few years saw the rise of Kerala Tourism as a truly global brand. Now, it has gained the rare distinction of becoming the only place from India and the 8th in the world among the list of ’12 destinations to watch’ in the Travel Trends Report 2017, published by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

The cover page of the report carries a photograph of traditional Kettuvallam (House Boat) of the ‘beautiful southern coastal state of Kerala.’

The ABTA report goes gaga over the beauty of Kerala backwaters and invites readers to enjoy lush, laid- back luxury 'in your very own floating hotel.’  “A journey through these placid (back) waters is best enjoyed in a luxuriously furnished Kerala ‘houseboat’, as the life of the local people, spice plantations and forests slowly unfold before you.”

“The food on board the houseboats is freshly prepared, with coconut, prawns and delicately-spiced fish featuring heavily; it’s a delicious and healthy mix,” it explains.

The ABTA also praises the spice and tea plantations near Munnar and Kerala's palm-fringed beaches. “The land is a true haven for travelers looking for the healing touch of Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old system of medicine still practiced to perfection throughout the state,” the report said.

Even though the ABTA is all praise for the natural beauty of the destination, it does not share the same opinion about the men there. The report warned women travellers to be cautious and to avoid isolated areas, including beaches, when alone ‘at any time of day.’

Recently, Kerala was voted the best honeymoon destination in India in a reader’s poll conducted by Travel + Leisure India and South Asia. The tiny island of Kakkathuruthu in Kochi's backwaters made it to a select list of stunning destinations across the world compiled by the National Geographic magazine in October last year. Kakkathuruthu, also called 'Island of Crows', was listed in the Nat Geo’s 'Around the World in 24 Hours', a photographic tour of travel-worthy spots across the world!
