Karnataka cancels bank holiday in late night circular

The state underwent a slight confusion until nearly 8 pm yesterday night with conflicting reports about whether or not banks would be closed today for Kanaka Jayanthi .

While the state government has declared a state holiday as per usual, and even bank guards began to inform customers that the bank was expected to be closed today, a circular was distributed later in the evening cancelling the holiday.

It is believed that the order was changed on standing instructions from the Centre, which has cancelled all bank holidays for the duration.

On Wednesday, speaking to the media, CM Siddaramaiah said that in order to facilitate the general public to exchange old currency, the government had cancelled the holiday for banks.

Hence all the Banks and ATMs will work as usual on Thursday. Kanaka Jayanthi holiday applies to all other government departments and private institutions except banks.
