Murder of Filipino woman lands three Keralites in jail

The Supreme Court in Kuwait sentenced three Keralites to lifetime imprisonment for brutally murdering a Filipino woman. The three were let off earlier citing lack of evidence but were recaptured recently. The men identified as Ajith Augustine belonging to Thamarassery, Tijo Thomas of Engapuzha and Tufail of Balussery had allegedly strangulated the woman to death and had set her ablaze in the apartment in which she lived to destroy evidence.

The incident which took place in February 2014 was initially thought to be the result of an accidental fire that broke out at her apartment but detailed forensic examination revealed that the woman had died three days before the blaze.

Though an attempt to destroy the evidence was made, a civil ID and a bank card that was recovered from the crime spot led the investigators to the youths who were working in a bakery. According to reports, Ajith had killed the woman who used to lend money on interest, to avoid repaying the money he had borrowed from her, with the help of his friends.

The Supreme Court observed that they should not be allowed parole.
