TSLA Cybercab Tests Begin In Austin

Tesla said on X that “engineering tests of the first production Cybercab have begun in Austin,” signaling another step toward the company’s planned robotaxi rollout. Musk further hyped the update by resharing Tesla’s post and highlighting that the Cybercab was driving around Austin with “no steering wheel or pedals.”

The update comes after Cybercab was added to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Connected Autonomous Vehicles First Responder Interaction Plans page, giving investors a closer look at how Tesla expects the vehicle to operate in real-world conditions. The development is notable since Cybercab is designed around Tesla’s fully autonomous ride-hailing vision.

Tesla’s first responder guide makes clear that Cybercab is not typically equipped with manual controls: “A Cybercab equipped with steering wheel, brake pedal, and an acceleration pedal is typically an engineering or test vehicle, and operates at SAE Level 2 autonomy,” the guide says. “Cybercab is not typically equipped with a steering wheel or acceleration and brake pedals.”

Cybercab Level 4 System Revealed

The guide also said that Cybercab Robotaxi is equipped with Tesla’s SAE Level 4 automated driving system: “When in Autonomous Mode, the vehicle is designed to be capable of performing the entire dynamic driving task without any input from a human driver,” Tesla said in the document.

Tesla said Cybercab’s operating domain includes public roads such as freeways, highways, city streets and rural roads, as well as private areas including parking lots, charging stations, car washes and parking garages. The vehicle is also designed to handle pickup and drop-off zones and operate during day and night, as well as in light and moderate rain, fog and snow.

In extreme weather, Cybercab is designed to stop accepting new rides, pull over at the nearest safe stopping location and notify Tesla Robotaxi Support if needed.

Tesla Details Emergency Features

The first responder documents also outline several safety and emergency features. Cybercab includes an active hood that raises during certain pedestrian impacts, at least 10 airbags, two first responder loops for redundancy, and emergency mechanical door releases.

The vehicle also has exterior microphones and speakers for two-way communication with Tesla Robotaxi Support. If a Cybercab faces connectivity or hardware issues, its hazard lights flash rapidly and the vehicle attempts to pull over safely.

Tesla also said Cybercab can respond to clearly visible hand signals from first responders and follow cone-designated pathways, a key detail for emergency and road-control situations.
