Baywatch is going to go down like a lead balloon. No pig can save it.

We are in a day and age where nostalgia = $$. It doesn’t matter if you have a good story or a valid reason for a reboot because people will still watch it.

Sometimes the reboots turn out great.

(Like in the case of 21 Jump Street.) Other times, it’s an obvious attempt at milking a franchise for all its worth. Unfortunately, Baywatch has proven to be a case of the latter. Baywatch was originally a cult TV Series with some substance attached to it. (Editor’s note: We respect differences in opinion. Baywatch was all substance, in our humble opinion).

Nonetheless, it had its own unique charm. With its big-screen adaptation, Baywatch is as disappointing Priyanka Chopra’s fake accent.

But, what’s the reason behind this fail?

It’s time to take a deeper look.

The movie has some big names attached to it like Priyanka Chopra, Dwayne Johnson, and Zac Effron. There’s only so much that star power, lifeguard costumes and being attractive can do to save a movie from drowning, but those three definitely have a role to play in the film’s projections of grossing around $40 million.

So, why are bad movies making good money?

The answer lies in the simple power of branding. At the end of the day, the combination of big stars, pop-culture status and oiled up bodies is just too irresistible for most people. On the other hand, it doesn’t really seem possible for Baywatch to have been a different sort of a movie, given its purpose and its audience.

Still, one can’t help but be nostalgic and think of the ‘good ol’ days’, when Baywatch was at its peak. At the end of the day, it’s just not the same without Mr Hasselhoff and Ms Anderson.
