Mistaken identity Thrissur man beaten up police criminal

A Thrissur native was reportedly taken into custody and beaten up by the police after they mistook him for a wanted criminal, apparently because of the colour of the shirt he was wearing.

The incident happened at the Shornur railway station on Tuesday when Sajeesh, a footwear maker who hails from Vennur, was waiting to board a train to go to his workplace in Farook, Kozhikode.

Two persons in plain clothes introduced themselves to Sajeesh as police and asked him if he was 'Patti Chacko', a wanted criminal accused in several theft cases. Informants had told the police that Chacko, wearing an orange shirt and mundu, was expected at the station. Unfortunately, Sajeesh was also wearing the same kind of clothes. Though he tried desperately to make the cops understand that he was not the man in question, the police forcibly took him into custody.

Sajeesh claimed he was assaulted in the police jeep and at the Cheruthuruthy police station. Later, the cops realised he was not the man they were looking for and released him.

Sajeesh's relatives claimed he faced difficulty in urinating and was taken to the government hospital in Chelakkara. He was later shifted to a private hospital in Thrissur. The relatives stated that they are planning to lodge a complaint over the police atrocity.

The Cheruthuruthy police admitted that Sajeesh was taken into custody after they mistook him for Chacko. However, the cops insisted Sajeesh was not beaten up and that they released him as soon as they realised the mistake.
