Love rasam made out of tomato? It's time to find an alternative for this key kitchen staple as the tomato price has gone unbelievably high. Tomato costs Rs 100 per kilogram in Bengaluru now.

With monsoon playing hide and seek in Karnataka, the price is expected to go high further. While it costs Rs 100 in Bengaluru, you will be shocked to know the price in other parts of Karnataka, especially the Hyderabad Karnataka. In Raichur markets, tomato costs Rs 120.

In fact, around July, the price of tomato was wavering around Rs 40 and Rs 60 per kilogram. Farmers expected good rain after Meterological Department too predicted the same. But the rain disappointed the farmers and it affected the tomato yield, drastically, reports Kannada Prabha.

At Hubli and Dharwad markets, tomato is priced at Rs 85 per kilo, Rs 70 in Haveri and Rs 70 in Uttar Kannada. While it costs Rs 80 in Gadag and Ballari. Even the situation is no different in Kolar and Chikkaballapur, the neighbouring districts of Bengaluru where tomato is predominantly grown.

In Kolar, tomato is sold at Rs 90 per kilo. "Lack of sufficient rain has drastically impacted the tomato crop. Majority of the farmers are vary of growing tomato this year. This has impacted the tomato price too," reports Kannada Prabha quoting Dr Bellur Krishna, Horticultural Producers Co-operative Marketing and Processing Society (HOPCOMS) Ltd director.

Except for Malenadu and coastal regions, there is no rain in most parts of the state. "Rain is expected in another one or two months and it might improve the situation," Prashanth, HOPCOMS general manager told Kannada Prabha.
