Tuticorin custodial death of father and son: Kollywood demands justice for Jayaraj and Fenix
Protests erupted in Thoothukudi over custodial deaths of two shopkeepers, a father and son, Jayaraj and Fenix.
Chennai: Kollywood film industry has joined hands to demand justice for a deceased father-son duo who was allegedly tortured in police custody. 59-year-old Jayaraj and 31-year-old son Fenix were taken to the police station on June 20 for violating lockdown rules. The duo was allegedly beaten to death by police. Reports also state that the father-son duo was allegedly sexually tortured.
Kollywood celebrities took to Twitter to demand justice for the father-son duo.
Actress-politician Khushbu Sundar took to Twitter and wrote, "Will we and can we see law taking its course and punishing the guilty without any further delay in #Jeyaraj and #Fenix case? The culprits cannot and should not get away. A family has lost their most loved ones. Justice delayed is justice denied. #JusticeForJeyarajAndFenix (sic)."
Actor Jayam Ravi called it an inhuman act and demanded justice for the same. "#JusticeForJeyarajAndFenix No one is above the law, justice must be done for this inhuman act (sic)," he wrote.
Meanwhile, the Madras high court directed the police to submit a report on July 26 over the death of the duo.
It is reported that the duo had kept their mobile accessories shop open during the lockdown on June 19, so police took them to custody for questioning.
Fenix died at the Kovilpatti General Hospital on June 22, while his father died on June 23.
A Chennai-based news site The Federal has quoted eyewitnesses as saying that Jayaraj and his son Fenix were allegedly sodomised in police custody. The report added that the duo when released from jail, were found profusely bleeding from their rectum.
