Clicking selfies in trainS can now put you behind bars for five years, according to a new amendment in the Railway Act proposed by the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Ever since selfies became a trend, a number of deaths have been reported in the country. It was noticed that majority of the victims either fell down from moving trains or were run over by approaching trains while taking a selfie.
These incidents prompted the RPF which is responsible for ensuring the safety of passengers and property, to propose amendments in the Railways Act to deal with such activities. According to the proposal, the violators will be booked under sections 147 and 153 of the Railway Act that deals with trespassing and causing threat to public life.
"The government rail police (GRP) and RPF will be instructed to book individuals taking selfies near a train on the platform, at the compartment exits or on railway tracks. This activity is liable to endanger not only their lives, but also that of others," a railway ministry official told India Today. He further said that the violators can also be booked for attempt to suicide.
The proposal will soon be sent to the Home Ministry for approval. The RPF has decided to start with Gujarat and then gradually implement the prosecution against selfies in other divisions of the railway.
