Over 6,000 turned up at the recruitment drive against the expected 4,000. It is alleged that stampede broke out after police lathi-charged the crowd.
Dozens of navy aspirants were injured in a stampede outside a naval base in Mumbai's Malad on Friday morning.

According to an NDTV report, the stampede broke out after a crowd of over 6,000 candidates arrived at the navy base - INS Hamla, instead of the expected 4,000.
An ANI report quoting the eyewitness said that the stampede broke out after police in an effort to control the crowd resorted to 'lathi-charge.' " 50% was the cut off, when they saw the crowd they made it 60%. When we protested, police lathi charged," an aspirant told ANI.
The police claimed that the candidates got injured because the crowd was massive. "There was not lathi charge," the police said.
