Priyanka Gandhi picks candidates for Uttar Pradesh elections
FollowPriyanka Gandhi Vadra seems to have taken charge of party affairs in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh in 2017. As Congress President Sonia Gandhi recuperates in hospital, Priyanka, according to a Time of India report, approved the list of 80 candidates for 2017 UP polls.
The list compiled by party leaders was cleared by Priyanka. It is reported that some of the candidates were handpicked by Priyanka herself.
Weeks back there were rumours that charismatic Priyanka would play more visible role in UP, but the party did not spell out things in clearer terms. The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) was earlier lobbying that Priyanka hits the campaign road from October onward.
According to the same newspaper, Priyanka’s equation with Rahul is “perfect” on such matters.
Earlier Sonia Gandhi had fallen ill during a much publicised roadshow in Varanasi and since then the Congress President has been recuperating in Delhi hospital.
The list of 80 candidates would be made public by end of August.
After lot of deliberations, the party has appointed new faces in top positions within UP Congress, keeping the polls in mind.
