The students of Srinivas College in Mangaluru staged a protest in front of the campus after they received a notice from the college stating that they weren't allowed to wear burqas in class.

The protesting students demanded the right to practice their religion which is a fundamental right according to the Constitution of India.

According to the students, they were denied the permission to wear headscarves or burqas inside the college campus. The students claimed that they were not allowed to attend the Friday namaz too. The students also alleged that the male students in the college were not allowed to grow their beards.

According to the Coastaldigest, Campus Front of India ( a Muslim outfit) had staged the protest at the Valachil campus and was supported by the parents of the Muslim students.

This incident comes at a time where Europe has been debating over the custom of wearing burqas and niqabs.
