Mahant Narendra Giri death case: Disciple Anand Giri, Hanuman temple priest being questioned

Three people have been taken into custody in connection with the death of Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad president Mahant Narendra Giri.

The Uttar Pradesh police have registered a case based on an eight-page suicide note allegedly recovered from the priest's Baghambari Math residence at Prayagraj.

Mahant Giri's disciple Anand Giri has been named as accused of abetment to suicide and is currently being interrogated by the police.

Before being detained, Anand Giri told media persons that his name was being dragged into the case as part of a conspiracy. 

Claiming that the Mahant had never written a letter in his life and could not have committed suicide, Anand Giri called for a wider investigation in the case.

The other two accused in the police custody are Lete Hanuman mandir priest Aadya Tiwari and his son Sandeep Tiwari. According to police sources, their names allegedly figure in the suicide note.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will visit Prayagraj today to pay his last respects to the deceased seer.

Tight security arrangements have been made outside the Baghambari Math.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mourned the demise of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad chief.

Leaders of all 12 Akhadas are expected to converge in Prayagraj to pay their last respects to Mahant Giri and also to nominate a new head of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad.
