Kerala cop sacked for stealing mangoes; he is also accused in a rape case

Thiruvananthapuram: A Kanjirapally police officer who stole 10 kilograms of mangoes from a fruit store has been sacked. PV Shihab, a civil police officer, was fired by the Idukki District Police Chief.

Apart from mango theft, there are other criminal cases pending against Shihab. Taking this into consideration, he was dismissed. 

The incident happened early on September 30th of last year. On his way home from work in Kottayam, Shihab, an officer of the Idukki AR camp, stole mangoes from a fruit shop in Kanjirapally. Shihab took 10 kilogrammes of mangoes that were brought down for sale and were worth Rs 600 per kilogramme. A CCTV clip showing a police officer stealing mangoes from a store and carrying it away in a bag has gone viral. Shihab then went into hiding. The shop owner's complaint led to the filing of a case against the police officer. The chief of the Idukki District Police then suspended Shihab. 

An attempt was made to settle the mango theft case since it brought disgrace to the police department. The shop owner then withdrew his complaint against the police officer. The subsequent procedures in the theft case under IPC 379 were ended after the court approved the application to settle the mango theft case. The judge ruled that the police can look into the case to see whether there are any more charges. Even though he attempted to resolve the matter, the SP advised the home department to fire him, claiming that the police department's reputation had been damaged. Shihab is charged in a rape case that was reported to the Mundakkayam police station. During the course of this case's trial, Shihab stole the mangoes.
