Demonetized dowry kills newlywed girl

A newly married girl was pushed to suicide by her own in laws in Rangipur village, Ganjam District, Odisha. Police sources say that the bride’s father was unable to arrange for ₹ 1.70 lakh in new currency notes, which was the dowry demanded by the in-laws.

Prabhati (20), daughter of Shiba Mandal, was in love with Laxmi Nahak. With the consent of both sets of parents, they got married on 9th November. The previous night, PM Narendra Modi had demonetized ₹500 and ₹ 1000 currency notes.

The groom’s parents refused to accept the ₹ 1,70,000 in scrapped notes offered by Prabhati’s father in the presence of all of their relatives and demanded for a dowry in new currency notes.

On November 28th at about 2.30 pm, Prabhati's in laws informed her parents that she had committed suicide by tying a Dhoti around her neck.

The girl's family, suspecting a murder considering the ongoing fight over dowry, filed a complaint at Golanthara police station.

Police rushed to the spot and are investigating the case.
