Delhi violence: Video of mosque being set on fire, vandalised creates more furore

Violence that erupted in Delhi have taken a turn for the worse. Visuals of a mosque being vandalised and set ablaze have made matters worse. At least 10 persons have died and 186 were injured on Monday, police said.

The rage of fire in the communal clashes in Delhi has only gotten bigger. While 10 deaths occurred on Monday, visuals of a mosque being set ablaze on Tuesday afternoon is doing the rounds on social media, making matters only worse. 

According to reports, the mosque in Ashok Vihar was set on fire by a mob shouting “Jai Shri Ram” and pro-Hindu slogans. 

A Hanuman flag was also placed on top the mosque by the mob, while surrounding stores were reportedly looted.

The flames raged on in Delhi on Tuesday as more personnel were deployed to control the situation. Among the lives lost in the violence was that of head constable Ratan Lal whose final rites were conducted today.

"Unfortunately 10 deaths have occurred including the death of Head Constable Ratan Lal. DCP Shahdara also sustained head injuries in the violence. 56 police personnel and 130 civilians have been injured in the riots," Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa told reporters.
Randhawa also used the opportunity to appeal for peace to be maintained and not fall for rumours.

“I appeal to people especially in North East Delhi to not take law in their hands,” he added. 

 A meeting regarding the situation in Delhi was held earlier in the day. Led by Union home minister Amit Shah, the meeting saw participation from Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, police commissioner Amulya Patnaik among other political leaders.

Section 144 has been imposed in affected areas of Delhi.
