Pulgaon arms depot fire: Defence minister, Army Chief rush to the spot

17 dead in a massive fire in ammunition factory near Nagpur

At least 17 security personnel,Ā including two Army officers, were today killed in a major fireĀ that broke out at the central ammunition depot inĀ Maharashtra's Pulgoan that houses the biggest stockpile ofĀ weapons in the country.


Two officers, including a Lieutenant Colonel, and 15Ā Defence Security Corp (DSC) jawans were among those killed inĀ the blaze, an Army officer said.


Also, at least 19 security personnel were injured in theĀ fire that has spread to number of sheds that housesĀ ammunitions, bombs and other explosive items.


Sources said residents of nearby villages have beenĀ evacuated and Army helicopters pressed into service to help inĀ the evacuation of the injured security personnel.


"The main fire at one of the sheds has been extinguished.Ā The situation is being stabilised. Secondary fire andĀ explosions cannot be ruled out now," the Army officer said
refusing to go into the reasons of the fire.


The army has ordered an inquiry into the incident.


The central ammunition depot at Pulgaon is India'sĀ biggest ammunition depot as stocks from various factoriesĀ comes here first and is then distributed to various forward
areas. Pulgaon is 110 kms from Nagpur.

Following a directive from Prime Minister Narendra Modi,Ā Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is in Pune, hasĀ rushed to the spot. Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag has also
Ā headed for the site.
