Army for Awaam: Kashmiris join 15 Rashtriya Rifles 'Village Games'

In an attempt to strike a chord with the local population and promote youth towards sports, the 15 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion on Thursday organised 'Vilgam Village Games Festival 2021' as part of the Army Day celebrations. Anish Singh reports.
The games festival was organised for the villagers of Ramhal, Rajwar and Magam block of Kupwara district.
"The festival witnessed the huge turnout of 1500 local Kashmiris and Gujjars along with 50 Covid Warriors (ASHA Workers) and village Panches and Sarpanches," a defence official said.
Ex-servicemen of the area placed a wreath at the Battalion’s War Memorial to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
8 Sector Rashtriya Rifles Commander Brigadier Neeraj Sharma inaugurated the festival by lighting up the Beacon of Unity.
A total of 21 village games like 'Piddu Garam', 'Spoon Race', 'Gilli Danda', 'Arm Wrestling', 'Wushu' and 'Karate' were organised in the festival for kids, youth and the elders of the villages.
"Panches and Sarpanches also showcased their strength in the game of Tug of War breaking all the barriers of age and proving that age is just a number," the official said.
On the occasion, ASHA workers were also felicitated for their selfless contribution during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Brig Sharma awarded the winners with prizes.
In order to excel in their competitive examinations, the commander also distributed books to the NEET, IIT and NDA aspirants. The medical camp was also set up for the villagers to undergo a routine check-up. Vilgam Block Medical Officer was also present in the event and provided his esteemed service during the medical camp.
In the end, Brig Sharma assured the Awaam that the Indian Army will always be readily available for them in all good and odd times.
