Lionel Messi is already the record goal-scorer for Barcelona, having scored 643 goals for the Catalans. He has also played record 748 matches for the club. Consequently, he has equalled Pele's record for scoring the most goals for a club.
Argentine footballing sensation, Lionel Messi is a step ahead in every aspect of the sport, as he keeps scaling new heights and scripting records with each passing game. Same was the case on Saturday, as he equalled a world record in the process.
Playing for Barcelona, he scored a goal in the 2-2 draw against Valencia at Camp Nou. Although he would have expected a better result, he achieved a personal feat in the process.
It was his 643rd goal for the club across competitions. In the process, he equalled the record of most goals for a club, held by Brazilian legend, Pele, who had done so while playing for Brazilian giant, Santos.
Consequently, the Brazilian took to his Instagram handle, congratulating the modern-day GOAT for the same, besides stating that he admired him. "When your heart overflows with love, it is difficult to change your path. Like you, I know what it's like to love wearing the same shirt every day. Like you, I know that there is nothing better than the place we feel at home. Congratulations on your historic record, Lionel. But, above all, congratulations on your beautiful career at Barcelona. Stories like ours, of loving the same club for so long, unfortunately, will be increasingly rare in football. I admire you very much, @leomessi," he wrote on his post.
Pele has played for Santos throughout his club career, as he had achieved the feat in just 656 matches. However, for Messi, it came a little late, as he has managed to do so in 748 games. Nonetheless, judging by the level of competition in European football, Messi's feat is highly commendable and justified.
Messi has won numerous football recognitions, besides being a record six-time Ballon d'Or winner, while he is continually being challenged by Portuguese sensation, Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds five. As for Pele, he has won the Ballon d'Or honour just once.
As far as Barcelona's performance this season is concerned, it has been far from impressive, as the side is placed fifth in the table, while Atletico Madrid leads the table. As for fellow La Liga giant, Real Madrid is on third, for now.
